About

Just what is the visual editing of headlines, stories, and newspapers?

What is this?

DesigningTheNews is a series of visual experiments which explore the news in various ways to encourage new ways of understanding information. The source of information for this project will come from the Guardian newspaper.

Why do this?

Everyday all over the world millions of people read the news, but often give little regard to the way it’s presented. The aim of the project is to develop structures, patterns, and exciting visual techniques to effectively present information.

How is this done?

Besides some early experiments with info graphics, the main focus of the project has been on data visualisation. With each piece created the perspective has shifted between the importance, the popularity, and the structure of the information.

What are the outcomes?

A series of print media, with examples of how certain aspects of the project would work in everyday real world scenarios. These would include A1 size posters for display, and supplement prototype ideas for inclusion into the Guardian paper.

This project is not affiliated with the Guardian newspaper in any way. Information taken from the Guardian to create some of the work was the personal choice of the author.

    Hi Dave
I’m on my final year as a graphic design student from the LCC. I came along and saw your talk at the BFI on 12 Nov. I was really interested in what you said and your work.

I am writing my dissertation on processes for designing info-graphics. I am looking for designers to feature as case studies. I wondered whether it might be possible to meet up with you to ask you a few questions about how you deal with large amounts of complex data, and how you break down a brief to reach the final outcome. Ideally I want to show a professional info-design project from start to finish, alongside an interview with the designer. Would this be something you might be able to help with?
Or do you know anyone else who I might contact?

    Thanks
    Alex

I’ve come across your website and find your points very educational and to-the-point.

I would love to share an infographic that Become.com has just created, “Six International Versions of Your Favorite Social Media Sites” at http://www.become.com/resource-center/infographic/social-landscape.html. If you would like to include it in your site, the HTML code is available there for you to use. I feel our content could be a great resource to your readers and enrich your site.
If you have any further questions please get back to me and let me know how I can help you.
